To start my reading process I like to print out and staple the text together so I have a paper copy that doesn’t have to be attached in the big book. When I start reading I look for things to annotate that I find interesting, that I agree with, that I think is important, or when I think the author is making a good point. I often highlight these things if I find them in the text and sometimes write comments on what I think or a summary of the main point of what I highlighted. I think the learning outcomes for this course can relate well to the reading process. I think that I am able to active and critically read the text we are given which is one of the learning outcomes. I also think by commenting on the sides of the page while annotating, I am integrating my own ideas but also working on summarizing and paraphrasing, which is another learning outcome. I think I am engaging with the text fairly well right now but I could engage more if I go back and read the text again to make sure that I understand the main concepts and ideas. I could also be thinking more analytically when I read, I think that would help my though process. I think if they texts we read were not assigned, I might have read some but not others. I probably wouldn’t have read the Yoshino text because that is not as interesting to me. However, I think I would have wanted to read the piece by the Dalai Lama anyways. I found that essay really interesting and I feel like it applies more to me as a health science major, I also found it interesting because we are talking about genes and other things he touched upon in my anatomy class at the moment.
