As writer Susan Gilroy once said, “Annotating puts you actively and immediately in a ‘dialogue’ with an author and the issues and ideas you encounter in a written text”. Annotating is an essential part to thoroughly comprehending a reading. It allows one to ask questions and connect with the text more. Throughout ENG 110, annotating our readings has allowed me to actively and critically read more than I had before. When I start a reading the things I try to pick out are the main points, questions I have, and things I find interesting or can relate to. Usually I will read the article twice to make sure I marked up all of the things I wanted to as well. If I don’t understand a section or if it is very brief, I might try to reason out or elaborate on what the author is trying to say. I will usually use a pen to make comments and underline, and a highlighter to highlight what I think the most important parts of the text are. I decided to mark something as important or as a main point if the content was discussed a lot. I would also mark it important if I thought the quote could be utilized later for my paper or homeworks. I think throughout the year my annotations have improved and I have been able to learn how to narrow down my markings to what is useful and important. Gilroy made it a big point that asking questions is important and I agree with her statement. Going forward, I will continue to ask questions and think critically when reading a text.
INFORMAL READING RESPONSE:
Above is one of the informal reading response homeworks that I completed this year. After annotating we were often asked to answer questions and apply critical thinking to the articles. I would use some of the quotes I marked to analyze what the question was asking. I think after taking ENG 110, I have learned how to critically answer questions better.
